The LOWER jaw bone of a 45ft long male sperm whale,  beached at Redcar in 2011, is to be unveiled at a special ceremony at Zetland Lifeboat Museum next week.

The 7ft lower jaw bone will go on display at 11am on Thursday March 27 at the venue on The Esplanade, Redcar.

In a vain attempt to keep it alive, firefighters sprayed it with water after it was left stranded as the tide went out but hours after the whale was washed up on June 1, the 35 tonne mammal died.

A post-mortem examination indicated that it probably died of starvation and dehydration after straying from its usual habitat.
