HARTLEPOOL Borough Council has been recognised by the Public Health Minister Jane Ellison in her first award scheme for its efforts in increasing the health of its workforce.

The new Public Health Minister’s Award, which launched in June, was developed by the Department of Health and Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) to celebrate excellence in public health.

In its first year, it recognised excellence and innovation in workplace health and wellbeing initiatives.

An expert panel was impressed with the quality and commitment to health demonstrated by the council’s programme and its impact, which extended into the community.

Hartlepool council, developed its ‘Workplace Wellbeing Strategy’ after assessments highlighted low physical activity, high alcohol and tobacco intake and poor diet within its workforce.

It offers staff a wide range of activities, from walking challenges to mental health support, which have cut staff absences.

Ms Ellison said: “A person’s health has a massive impact on their working and personal life and it is vital that employers recognise this. The winner, Hartlepool Borough Council, has clearly taken all these messages to heart."

Leader of Hartlepool council, Christopher Akers-Belcher: “It really acknowledges the superb workplace health initiatives we have developed across Hartlepool.”

The award was accepted by Louise Wallace, the council’s director of public health.
