A BUSINESSMAN who has turned around the fortunes of a key tourist attraction has been honoured for his efforts in drawing visitors to Hambleton district.

Ian Ashton, managing director of The World of James Herriot, in Thirsk, said he was delighted to receive the Champion accolade at Hambleton District Council's annual business awards.

Other award winners included Barry Dodd, Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire and chairman of the Local Enterprise Partnership, who received the lifetime achievement award for both his work as a businessman creating employment and helping drive the economy of Hambleton forward.

Well Heeled Boutique, in Thirsk, landed the apprenticeship award for encouraging other businesses to take local apprentices on, while Bedale and Villages Community Forum won the community contribution accolade for its social media and website.

Two Bees Treat Boutique, in Thirsk, scooped the best window display title, while Stewart Brennan, of Tanton Technology, Stokesley, was handed the engaging Young Minds Award for his work promoting engineering and science.

The Learning and Development Award went to Ryedale Plasterers from Brompton, Olivia's Artisan Bakery and Café, Northallerton won the Local is Best accolade, while IT-IS International, of Stokesley, was recognised with the Innovation Award for its DNA testing developments.

The authority's deputy leader, Councillor Peter Wilkinson said: “The council continues to support businesses no matter how big or small, established or just starting out, and these winners demonstrate that this is a place to develop and raise a business.”
