VOLUNTEERS are needed in Hambleton and Richmondshire to help launch a new service for young people facing homelessness.

The charity Sash is looking for people who can offer a room in their home to vulnerable people aged between 16 and 25.

The charity already helps young people in Hambleton and Richmondshire through its Nightstop emergency accommodation project and is now launching a Supported Lodgings scheme in the area, offering longer-term support for vulnerable people who need a safe place to stay while they develop independent living skills.

Anyone able to volunteer will be vetted, trained and supported and receive expenses to cover the costs of volunteering.

Fiona and Mark Reynolds, who live in Northallerton, have been SASH hosts for just over a year and have helped three young people so far.

Mrs Reynolds said: “If SASH hadn’t been available you get the feeling they would have had to go back into the situation that they were trying to get way from, back into a vulnerable position.

“The work SASH does bridges a gap to provide the care the young people need.”

Sarah Ware, community co-ordinator for SASH said: “We now urgently need supported lodgings hosts to offer a room and work with the SASH support workers to prepare young people to live independently. There are no special skills required to get involved – you just need a spare room and a willingness to help vulnerable young people at a difficult time.”

Anyone interested in volunteering with SASH can drop in to Northallerton Library during Volunteer Week between June 1 and June 7, where staff will be on hand with information.
