A PROJECT to replace an almost derelict scout hut is one of the first projects to be awarded cash from new grant schemes in the Hambleton district.

The hut in Tholthorpe, near Easingwold is to benefit from one of two grant schemes which collectively will deliver initiatives to the tune of £624,799 across the district.

“These two grant schemes are helping local communities deliver much needed projects – like replacing this near derelict scout hut,” said the council’s portfolio holder for customer services, Coun Nigel Knapton.

“By adding often small amounts to the fundraising pots we are bringing forward schemes that have been in the planning for years.”

There has been a hut on the Tholthorpe site since the Second World War – with the existing building erected in 1984 for Kyle Valley Scouts.

However it has now running water or toilet facilities, its windows are broken or boarded up and is suffering badly from pest, bird and rodent infestation.

The scout’s fund-raising co-ordinator Julie Henley said: “It has been in poor condition for some time so our new log cabin is going to be a massive improvement. We have raised funds for many years to get to this point so to see work beginning is very exciting.”

The £176,425 scheme has received £7,430 from the district council.
