LEADING sports performers, coaches and volunteers have been honoured for the recognition they bring to Hambleton district.

More than 130 people attended the Hambleton Sports Awards and heard from guest speaker Stephen Miller, the four times club throw gold medallist in the Paralympic Games.

The Hambleton District Council and North Yorkshire Sport event saw two Northallerton triathletes, brothers Douglas and Fergus Roberts, named as joint sportsperson of the year.

Shot put and discuss specialist Kaitlin Enderwick, from Battersby, on the North York Moors, scooped the junior sportswoman title, while five times Special Olympic gold medallist gymnast Chloe Hunt, of Sowerby, landed the junior disabled sportsperson award.

Other winners included rugby coach Duncan Burgess, from Thirsk, who received the coach of the year title, while Ian Richardson, of Northallerton, was given the Hambleton Service to Sport Award and Mark Jarvis, of Borrowby, the lifetime achievement award, for their work to promote football and cricket.

Slalom canoeist Jake Brown from Swainby and horse rider Heidi Marsden, of Seamer were handed the 123 Gold Inspire Award.

Northallerton horse rider Lindsey McLaren and England cerebral palsy team footballer Joe McKechnie won the North Yorkshire sportsman and sportwoman of the year titles, while Thirsk Hockey Club’s under-14s girls team received the team award.
