MORE than 100 vulnerable people now feel safer in their homes thanks to a local initiative.

The “Safe But Secure” project provides a rapid responsive security scheme to identified victims of domestic abuse, violence or anti-social behaviour.

It is funded through the Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership but operated through the Vale and Dale Home Improvement Agency.

And in the last 12 months, 112 homes were given advice and received equipment – 21 locks were changed and security cameras and light sensors were fitted at three properties.

Manager Joan Irving said: “Once a client is referred to our scheme we arrange a home visit to assess and provide the items needed to make them feel safe.

“The client is given immediate priority over other jobs. We can provide and fit lock changes, security cameras, light sensors and referred safe rooms.

“One of the recent cases saw help for a victim of domestic abuse – her abusive partner was about to be released from prison and she was concerned for her safety.

“With our help a full security survey was completed and security lighting fitted and she now feels more secure.”
