A CAMPAIGN is being launched to find new families for children with special educational needs.

The Durham County Council drive is targeted at potential adoptive parents and aims to unite families with children who need extra help and care.

The council has more than ten children with “additional needs” looking for a family that can support them in learning to walk, talk and cope with their emotions.

A drop-in information session will be held at the Gala Theatre, Millennium Place, Durham City tomorrow (Thursday) from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Visitors can meet adoptive parents and find out more about the support available for anyone willing to become an adoptive parent.

Wendy Ellis, Durham County Council’s adoptive team manager, said: “Adoption can make a real difference to the lives of children and the families who adopt them.

“We want to encourage more people to find out how they can adopt.

“Many people don’t realise the support that is available. A long time ago when families adopted they were left alone to get on with things, but it’s different now and there’s lots of support available.”
