PLANS have been submitted for 145 new homes in Howden-le-Wear.

Apex Architectural Planning has lodged an application to develop land next to Vicarage Close and Hargill Road with Durham County Council.

More than a dozen residents have objected to the proposals, with many raising concerns about road safety, drainage problems, the size of the development and the need for more homes in the area.

One resident said: “I Live on Hargill Road, there are pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, and children using and crossing the road.

“The worry for me is the traffic and the increase in traffic will affect all of those users. The situation will be aggravated if the development went ahead.”

In a statement the applicant said the plans for 145 two-storey homes are compatible with the surroundings.

“House types and sizes will be varied to provide a range of family homes that meet the needs of the area.

“The application has sought to demonstrate that the proposed development will be compatible with the site’s surroundings, will not adversely affect the character and appearance of Howden-Le-Wear, has regard to the local environment and will be accessible and inclusive.”
