PARKING at a council’s car parks will be free after 3pm during December.

Durham County Council says the “free after three” initiative will support high street businesses and make Christmas more affordable.

Parking will also be free from 10am on Saturday, December 6, as part of Small Business Saturday.

The offer will apply to all council-owned car parks across County Durham, plus on-street parking in Durham City.

Councillor Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said: “We’ve been working with local businesses throughout the summer to look at ways of encouraging more people into our town centres.

“By offering ‘free after three’ parking throughout December we hope to provide a welcome boost to local businesses as well as help to cut the cost of Christmas for residents across the county.

“As the lifeblood of our towns and villages, it’s vital that we all support our local high street businesses so we’re delighted to show our ongoing commitment to Small Business Saturday by also offering free parking on 6 December.”
