ICI memories collected in book
FORMER workers at ICI's chemical complex at Billingham have written a140-page book in memory of the firm which ceased trading on January 2.
Life at the ICI: Memories of Working at ICI Billingham will be formally launched on Tuesday at the Synthonia club, Billingham.
The book is the result of extensive research by a group of volunteers who form the Teesside Industrial Memories Project.
They interviewed more than 80 ex-ICI staff, from works managers to messengers, to give an insight into life at what was once the largest chemical complex in the British Empire.
Extracts from interviews were collated by editor Dr Margaret Williamson, of Teesside University. The work has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project's committee members are chairman Dennis Carroll, treasurer John Robinson, secretary Jean Richards, membership secretary Josie Jones and consultant Julian Phillips.
The book has been published and printed by Printability Publishing/Atkinson Print, of Hartlepool, at 9.99. It is on sale at Borders book store, Teesside Park, local branches of WH Smith, the Book Inn, Billingham, Waterstones, Middlesbrough, Guisborough Bookshop and Atkinson Print, Church Street, Hartlepool.
