Laying down her pen after 93 years
A LEADING historian has decided to call time on her literary career on the eve of her 94th birthday.
As a final farewell, Vera Robinson spent the day signing copies of her 11th and last book Redcar Miscellany: Past and Present in the town's Central Library.
The dedicated writer was given the Freedom of the Borough by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council in 2001 for her services to the town.
She said: Its 80 pages of information, covering local facts and brought up to date. It is packed with information and includes the histories of South Gare, Stead Hospital, Redcar Racecourse and a page on all Redcars listed buildings.
But she admitted: This is my final book. Im giving up writing now.
However, as she reached her 94th birthday on Wednesday, she insisted: I dont think Ill have time to celebrate, Im still doing too many things.
Coun Sheelagh Clarke, the council cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism said: Shes a wonderful lady, who is loved throughout the borough. What an example she is to both young and old for what can be achieved in life. We can all learn from Vera.
Redcar Miscellany: Past and Present is priced £6.
