TRUSTEES of Brockley Hall, Saltburn, have replied to criticism by a resident of their sale of land to retirement homes specialist firm McCarthy and Stone for about £560,000.
Trustees’ chairman Stuart Martin said a valuation was obtained from a nationally-known firm of surveyors, as demanded by charity law.
He said the money was being used to finance an extension of 11 double en suite rooms, including disabled access and a lift.
He said it was hoped construction work on the extension would be completed by December.
It would enable a present unsatisfied demand for accommodation at Brockley Hall to be met.
Mr Martin was commenting on claims made by David Knowles, who lives next to the hall in Albion Terrace, printed in the D&S Times on July 16 under the headline “11th-hour bid to stop flats in hall garden”.
Mr Knowles, who is secretary of Saltburn Civic Society, asked any potential benefactors to contact him “to see if a decent, long-term solution could still be found”.
The 21-flat block for retired people is due to be completed by next summer.
McCarthy and Stone said there had been a good level of interest in the properties.
