Scrum for poppy fund
10:35am Wednesday 17th October 2012 in News
SOLDIERS are to scrum down with a civilian rugby team in aid of the Poppy Appeal.
Catterick Barbarians, a team of soldiers from Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, will play an exhibition match against Clems Pirates, a group of North-East players, to support the Royal British Legion (RBL) fundraising drive.
Sergeant Andrew Stevenson, head coach of the Catterick Barbarians, said: “Many of our players have returned from tours in Afghanistan and, sadly, a lot of them have had close friends who have passed away or been seriously injured on operation there. The RBL means a lot to the players.”
The match will take place at Durham City Rugby Club, in Green Lane, Durham, on Thursday, October 25, at 7pm.
There is no entry fee but spectators will be asked to make a Poppy Appeal donation.
