New bid for part-time firefighters

JOB INSIGHT: Firefighters Steve Davies, Andy Wake and Tom Crosier speak to Joanne Fern and Isla Wibberly about their work
FIREFIGHTERS were out in Leyburn attempting to attract prospective recruits.
As part of a countywide campaign to attract part-time staff, a team of experienced firefighters spent the day in Leyburn Market Place speaking to the public and answering questions about their work. An open evening at Leyburn Fire Station was also held.
With many stations throughout the county run by the volunteer firefighters, keeping numbers up is vital. The retained or on-call firefighters are professionals and fully trained.
Rather than being based at a fire station they cover from home or their place of work.
To become an on-call firefighter, basic tests have to be passed to show a potential recruit could carry out the duties required. Successful applicants attend a twoweek initial course with more training later.
