YORKSHIRE has beaten destinations including Cornwall, Scotland and Wales to be named the UK’s best holiday destination in a global travel awards.

Welcome to Yorkshire was crowned Britain’s top leisure location at the World Travel Awards. It also won the marketing innovation award for work to promote the county.

Welcome to Yorkshire has now won five World Travel Awards in three years after winning the world’s leading marketing campaign in 2010 and last year.

Tourism is worth £7bn a year to the region.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, who lives on a sheep farm in the Yorkshire Dales, said: “The win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain, but the world over.”

The tourism body is now campaigning to bring the Tour de France to Yorkshire in 2014.
