Man fighting for life after attack in pub

INQUIRIES HELD: Police at the William Stead pub, in Darlington INQUIRIES HELD: Police at the William Stead pub, in Darlington

A MAN was last night fighting for life after being attacked in a pub.

The incident took place just after 11pm on Monday in The William Stead, in Crown Street, Darlington.

The victim, a 33-year-old local man, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital and transferred to The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he was last night in intensive care.

Police are still searching for those responsible for the attack.

Detective Sergeant Sean Jackson, of Darlington CID, said: “This was a very violent assault and, as a result, the victim is in intensive care.

“The attack took place in the downstairs area of the pub, directly in front of the bar. Anybody who witnessed it would have been shocked by the level of violence used.

“We have the suspects on CCTV and we are confident we will be able to locate them.”

The pub closed after the attack and remained shut yesterday as police investigated.

The venue is run by pub company JD Wetherspoon. A spokesman said last night: “This was a very distressing incident and we will be work with the police as they carry on their investigations.”

Anyone who saw the attack, or who has information, is asked to call Detective Sergeant Sean Jackson on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555- 111.

Maybe if you posted pictures of the offenders the members of the public could recognise them responsible.

Does this pub not have door staff? If so, where were they?

D Hop.
The only pubs that have door staff are pubs where trouble is likely to occur. Decent people avoid them.

I'm not blaming door staff, merely asking a question.

Well this is tragic. But after a recent night out in town (first and last in a year) not surprising. The tiwn is full of low life's and the main reason a lot of people (myself included) no longer drink in the town centre.

Hope the bloke gets better and they catch the scum that do this

Absolutely shocking!! My thoughts are with the family of the man involved. Things like this happen far too often now on a weekend but on a Monday!!!!! Praying that he pulls thru and makes a full recovery. The staff at JCUH will be doing an amazing job!!! If anyone knows anything please help to catch the scum that did this!!!!
