Pensioner killed while walking on dual carriageway

AN 86-YEAR-OLD man has been killed after walking along a dual carriageway and being hit by an articulated lorry.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway of the A19, at Thirsk, at 8.40pm last night, but the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the lorry, which police have described as being orange, was shaken, but uninjured.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said an investigation had been launched into the collision and how the pensioner came to be there.

Residents of the nearby Hambleton housing estate said the man, who lived locally, but has not been named, may have walked on to the trunk road as the collision was close the to junction with the A168 and the A19 York turn-off.

Traffic Constable Steven Wood, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, urged anyone who saw the man walking along the A19 or the lorry before the collision to contact him by calling 101 or emailing steven.wood161@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.

He said: “I understand that at the time of the collision a car was overtaking the orange lorry.

“Although they were not involved in the collision it is possible that the driver may have vital information that could help the investigation. I ask them to contact the police as soon as possible.”
