Liverpool legend's rant at Darlington theatre following Hillsborough revelations

ANGRY concertgoers walked out after Liverpudlian singer Gerry Marsden launched a “foulmouthed tirade” against the police during a performance in the region.

The lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers upset several audience members with a five minute “rant” about the Hillsborough disaster while performing at Darlington Civic Theatre on Saturday night.

The singer, whose Liverpool FC anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone has re-entered the top 40 this week after the publication of a damning report into the 1989 tragedy, referred to police as “pigs” and “f****** liars” during the outburst.

One member of the audience, a former policeman who has asked not to be named, said: “It was a foul-mouthed tirade and it spoilt our night.

“He said it in a way that suggested he was talking about all police – not just those who did something wrong.”

Another audience member, originally from Liverpool, said: “It wasn’t the time or the place – he was very offensive.”

At one point, the singer got into an argument with a woman sitting near the front of the ‘60s Gold Tour 2012 concert, which also featured The Animals and US singer PJ Proby.

According to witnesses, he asked the woman if she was a member of the police, before continuing the argument.

The woman and a friend then got up and left.

A spokeswoman for the theatre confirmed that two members of the audience walked out of the show and two other comments were made about the singer’s behaviour, although no official complaints were received.

The Northern Echo spoke to Mr Marsden’s management company yesterday, but nobody was available to comment.

Supporters launched a campaign to get You’ll Never Walk Alone back in the chart this week, helping it to number 12 in the Official Chart.

Mr Marsden has said he would donate the proceeds to charity.

The incident occurred only days after the damning Hillsborough Independent Panel report revealed a cover-up took place to shift the blame onto the victims and that 41 of the 96 lives lost could have been saved.

Home Secretary Theresa May said yesterday that anyone who broke the law in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster should be pursued and prosecuted.

ALL POLICE WHO MADE STATEMENTS ABOUT HILLSBOROUGH THAT WERE ALTERED SHOULD BE PROSECUTED
WHETHER OR NOT THEY SAY THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THEM BEING ALTERED.
IT SHOWS THAT POLICE FORCES UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY ARE CORRUPT.
PUT THEM IN JAIL FOR THE CORRUPTION.

we saw this concert and it was great, we thought the comments were made were fair he was speaking from the heart. surely everyone in the audience would have been shocked if he had not made any reference to the tragic events which have been in the news all week.he was defending the people of liverpool which he had every right to do , as the evidence in the hillsborough report proves.he did receive a standing ovation from the remaining 99.99% of the audience.

There will be corrupt people in all walks of life including police and I do appreciate that police should be beyond reproach.....however not all police are corrupt, indeed we some of the best policing in the world and we should be grateful for that and I believe the majority of our law abiding population are..........however we have an element of society who would love to see all police pilloried because of the corrupt few; these people who endorse the shameful attack on the whole of the force are the one's to be wary of........ not a generally decent police force.

Gerry and The Pacemakers.........

Living on past glories., and if it wasn't for Hillsborough, no one below the age of 40 would have a clue who he is!

One word used repeatedly in respect of the Hillsborough disaster is "respect". Surely Marsden should have shown respect to the audience by limiting his "speech" to criticism of the alleged guilty parties and refraining from the use of foul language.

Gerry Marsden often moans & swears onstage but in a funny way.He sometimes also exchanges words with audience members. This time it seems he went a bit too far as 99% of our police force are honest & true.Since the shooting yesterday of 2 policewomen in Manchester I wonder if Gerry now regrets his very harsh words!

Oooh, some sensitivies were "hurt" just because Gerry Marsden finally felt free to vent his feelings (and that of many others') which he couldn't all this while. . Come off it. This is a country that allows bands like The Sex Pistols and Bernard Manning (oooh, nobody below the age of 40 would cotton on what I am talking about). When I read the headline, I thought something really deplorable had taken place. Elton John's rants were much worse. Oh, I can image Gerry saying to the audience " I must say 98% of the police are decent, but 2% are pigs..." Five minute rant? Nothing compared to the 20 year wilful, disgusting, deplorable lies perpetuated . Which is worse? Just think about it. For 20 years, innocent people suffered mentally and emotionally. It is so cruel. Did anyone highlight this cruelty. Just to clarify: Is Northern Echo a Tory paper?
