Girl, three, dies after incident at York play area
A TODDLER has died after becoming tangled in outdoor play equipment.
The three-year-old girl was injured in a play area this afternoon at York College’s day nursery.
She was taken to York District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
York City councillor Anna Semlyen, whose ward covers York College, said: “This is a terrible tragedy, and our condolences go out to the family of this little girl.
“There needs to be a full investigation into what happened and a report prepared for the coroner.”
The nursery, which cares for children aged from six weeks to five years, opened in 2007.
A recent Ofsted report rated it as outstanding – highlighting its “superb outdoor facilities”.
It is understood the girl became tangled in a piece of equipment after coming off a slide.
Police were called to the nursery, in Sim Balk Lane, off Tadcaster Road, at about 2.35pm by the ambulance service.
A police spokeswoman said: “The scene is currently cordoned off as officers investigate the incident.
“At this stage, police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.
‘‘The police are carrying out an investigation into the incident to establish exactly what happened and would like anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.”
Ofsted and the Health and Safety Executive have been
informed. A York City Council spokesman said: “All relevant agencies are aware and will be working together over the next few days.
“This evening our thoughts are with the family of the child and staff at the nursery.”
The college referred all inquiries to North Yorkshire Police, who urged anyone with information to call them on 101.
