A TRUCK driver has been killed and another seriously injured in a crash between three HGVs on the A1 in North Yorkshire this morning.

The crash happened on the northbound carriageway of the A1 south of Catterick , near the Kirby Fleetham junction, at 2am today.

Police said a HGV carrying bottled gas collided with another lorry carrying a green combine harvester that was parked in a lay-by.

The HGV carrying bottled gas stopped shortly after the collision, but was then struck by a third wagon which was towing a curtain side trailer.

The male driver of the HGV carrying bottled gas suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the curtain side HGV was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police collision investigators are carrying out enquiries at the scene.

Highways officers have put in place a diversion running between Junction 51 at Leeming Bar and Scotch Corner. This is expected to be in place until at least 5pm while resurfacing work is carried out.

The southbound carriageway is open.

Anyone with information that could assist the collision investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Martin Usher.

Six hours after the lorry crash, there was a six-car pile-up on one of the diversionary routes from the A1 accident.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man from Richmond on suspicion of drink driving after the collision at 8.10am on the B6271 at Great Langton. The road diversion was completely blocked whilst emergency services dealt with the second pile-up and reopened the road at about 10.10am.

As a result of the collision, two people were taken to the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton, suffering from minor injuries.

The 19-year-old man who was arrested remains in police custody for questioning.

The North East is the only English region completely cut off from the national motorway network. We are totally isolated and have to rely upon two roads running over capacity (A1 and A19) built to 1960's standards to go south. As far as driving north or west is concerned - nightmare. When will we get a decent link constructed?

As one of the officers dealing with the second incident. I would like to thank the drivers present for their patience and understanding.

If the HSE were investigating an employer who killed people that employer would be straight in court. Responsibility for this lies with the Department of Transport who cancelled the extension of the A1 Motorway contract due to a supposed lack of funds. Perhaps the HSE should investigate the DoT and instruct them to construct a road network that is fit for purpose! RIP to the Wagon Driver.

Good post, I fully agree, how many more people are going to have to be killed, there are always accidents on this stretch of dual carriaged road, it is far too busy to remain as it is! Obviously human life remains low on the priorities of the government

I travel this route every week and the section from Leeming to Scotch Corner is truly dangerous. From three lanes to two both lanes with traffic a steady stream, winter coming on how many more accidents. Mind some of the lorries are not without blame, travelling too fast, too close, overtaking one another holding up traffic as they try to overtake. I'm really glad when I reach home - safely.

How many more poor souls will be crippled and killed on this GLORIFIED *A* road. It is a national discrace that this road has not been upgrade in its entirety to *M* standards. And a said by prior entries the lorries do go to fast and far to close, I have driven on Englands for the last 40 years and have seen it time and time again alas on thes two lane A the lorries do travel far to close and do try and intimidate other road users. But i fear there is no answer to the problem. Fellow drivers just beware.

I am a coach driver from Darlington and I travel to Leeming every day.. I also use this stretch of road a lot every day... I agree with earlier posts far too busy to be 2 lanes .... It should of been upgraded when they had done the Dishforth to Leeming... I too am thankful when I reach home safely... Thoughts go out to everyone involved x

It is a very stretch I drive it a fair bit too and would love to see it upgraded but why do people always blame the roads?

Under stood your view , people prefer to blame the Roads rather than their Driving . Hopefully after this Tragedy the idiots who decided not to upgrade will review their Decision and do the Sensible thing ie Find the Funds , and Save lifes rather than Money

Its poor drivers who blame roads. Speeding, tailgating and reckless lane changing and this is the carnage you can expect.
