Rugby club Arena plan could involve Quakers

MOWDEN Park Rugby Club yesterday revealed its £6m vision to transform Darlington Arena into a venue for international rugby and music concerts – as talks are planned with the Quakers about a possible groundshare.

The rugby club’s plan to take over the Quakers’ former football stadium hinges on its ability to buy an adjacent plot of council-owned land.

Officials have spoken to Darlington Borough Council about the plot and intend to submit a formal offer on Monday, the club said.

Mowden has reached agreement to buy the Arena for a sum believed to be in the region of £2m.

It is understood the club will be left with about £4m from the sale of their premises at Yiewsley Drive for housing.

Some of this money would be used to buy the extra land for the development of six more pitches, said Mowden chairman John Widdall.

He said: “It will remain primarily a rugby club, but we want to develop a wider sports base and involve the whole community.

“With all the minis, juniors and women, we are now running 23 teams and we need more space.

“There’s a shortage of international rugby in the North, but there’s no reason why the stadium shouldn’t stage an England Women’s game or England Under-18s.”

The rugby club had planned to move to a new site at West Park, but this deal collapsed.

Mr Widdall said: “We need to move, so we went to see the council about any parcels of land which might be available and the subject of the stadium cropped up.

“There are two plots of low-quality agricultural land next to it – one of 17 acres, one of 23.

“We are quite happy to talk to the football club again as their aim is obviously to get back into Darlington.

“We would also look at staging concerts.”

Mr Widdall added that the club may also speak to Newcastle Falcons, who it is rumoured were interested in buying the stadium. The chairman said they were aware of the costs involved in running the 25,000-seater Arena and said there were no expectations that Mowden’s average crowd of 200 would increase.

“The gate receipts don’t come into our calculations,”

he said.

“A lot of figures have been bandied about concerning the cost of running the stadium, but they are footballbased and involve things like match-day stewards.

“Any repairs that are currently needed will be sorted out with the owners in the sale process.

“After that, we know the running costs will be substantial, but we have the ability to manage that for a number of years until we establish an income stream.”

Bellway Homes has permission to build 67 houses on Mowden’s Yiewsley Drive site.

Mr Widdall said the club could move to the Arena this season if necessary.

“We don’t want to rush into it, but we’d like to see it all sorted out in three months,” he added.

DFC 1883 chairman Denis Pinnegar said last night that he would be happy to talk to the rugby club, adding: “We’re willing to talk to anyone who can help bring Darlington FC back to Darlington.”

However, although talks will take place, it is believed the football club would be reluctant to move back to the Arena in its present form, with many fans preferring a smaller stadium similar to the club’s temporary home in Bishop Auckland .

I am enjoying watching football at Bishop but I believe that Darlington Fc needs to be based in Darlington and if that means the Arena then so be it. It's a great facility even though it is obviously too big. If the football on offer is good then I personally couldn't care less where I'm watching it but would prefer it to be in Darlington. Stop being so negative about the place

I am sick to death reading comments like the above ^

"Stop being so negative about the place" 3 administrations and a drop in total of 6 levels to show for our 9 years there is a reason to be positive is it?

Getting out of that godforsaken white elephant is the best thing that could have happened to Darlington F.C and yet despite the well documented history of the place a minority of hangers on still want to go back there?!

It was an embarassment in the confernece with 1,700 people in it imagine how it will look with 1,000 in it in the Northern/Evo Stik league?!

Yes we need a ground in Darlington but going back to the one that pushed out in the first place is that the answer and never will be.

A return to that souless empty bowl will mean the end of my involvement with Darlington F.C after 13 years.

To be fair, if we returned - from a financial perspective we wouldn't have the same problems as before with trying to make the stadium self sufficient, that'd be the rugby clubs problem and bloody good luck to them cos they're gonna need it?

Our return would have to be for an affordable rent to us, or no deal, so there is actually no worries about a 4th administration.

it aint just about the rent it would scare fans away due to its souless atmosphere which would still be same even if darlington wnt back to football league. infact they would probably get more playing at a ground like bishop aucklands in evo stick or northrn league than returning here if and when they get promoted back to blue square

For the footy club to return to the town they have to share the Arena. Why? Well the club does not have the money needed to buy or lease the land required; as well as build a ground that will allow them to climb higher through the pyramid. At least this way they would have a landlord with money and business acumen.

It does appear Heritage Park ground share is working well for Darlington.
It is early days (only 6 games in) for a Northern League team club to be thinking of a permanent ground (which is needed in Darlington) until they fulfil progress and give evidence of stability and sustainability.
This Northern Echo report lacks any depth and is to say the least extremely speculative.

I think the stadium would need to be shrunk to 8,000 - 10,000 capacity to make it work at all.

I have really enjoyed the games at Bishop Auckland after staying away from that hideous souless stadium, a return there will almost certainly finish my support of Darlington 1883. I say to the powers to be, think very carefully before considering such a decision.

To those that say they would not support the team if they returned to the Arena, I must ask if you are indeed supporters ?. To those who like Heritage Park, yes I agree, atmosphere, set up is great, but club must return to Darlington at some point. However, the groundshare with Bishops has one tremendous advantage. Both clubs are in the same League, so fixture clashes will never be a problem. Share with a Rugby club, who run several sides, and we would be simple tennants, then we are at their mercy. Rugby games would take preference and if Darlington were to progress back up the pyramid, higher Leagues than the Northern would frown on last minute postponements, requests for fixture changes etc. For these reasons alone a ground share with Mowden Park would be a risky commitment. Better a couple of years at Bishop to let things settle down, because so far things are going well on and off the pitch with results and attendances (home and away) pleasing everyone.

could not agree anymore with this comment^^^^^. Walk before we can run, people need to understand we are a part time club and slowly getting back up the league is the most important thing. Personally i wish that ground got ripped down and tesco put in its place, instead of reminding us fans of the fat mackem **** that built it!

Would be a good idea , providing DBCouncil change the covenant as well , instead of taking money , that would help both the Rugby and Football Club ! As they must take a lot of blame , for turning DFC into a sinking ship in the 1st place ! Otherwise , this is a complete waste of time and funds ! Bill Dixon , says he cares about the Club ! This is an opportunity ! For All ! Do or die !

I'm sure Mowden Park would make a massive effort to make it work, but please please don't involve Darlington Football Club, they've had there chance and failed each time. The ground is ideal for more activities and with any luck the council will ok this opportunity.
