Fire crews called into action as North Yorkshire hit by flash floods

FIRECREWS have been inundated with calls following torrential rain in North Yorkshire yesterday afternoon.
Catterick Garrison was deluged in heavy rainfall and more than 20 calls were received by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue in two hours.
At 3pm fire crews from stations at Colburn, Richmond, Northallerton, Reeth, Masham and Leyburn were all called to an estate off Hipswell Road West where properties had flooded. Sandbags had to be requested from Richmondshire District Council as fire crews tried to protect properties and pump out flooded homes on streets in and around Essex Close and Bedford Close.
There were also reports of flooding at the village of Hunton near Bedale.
Torrential rainfall caused floods across the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday as well.
North Yorkshire fire crews were called out to a string of incidents that stretched along the path of the storm from Harrogate to Catterick.
They were first called to a flooded property at Little Ouseburn, near Boroughbridge at about 6.30pm and then to a house in Grewelthorpe, near Ripon, where 2ft of water had flooded the kitchen in the kitchen.
A spokesman said crews were then called to properties flooded on the main street in nearby Kirkby Malzeard and an Italian restaurant in Harrogate.
The guttering on the restaurant had been unable to cope with the heavy rainfall.
At 8.50pm a crew from Masham came to the aid of a driver whose car had got stuck in flood water on Thorpe Road and they helped push the car to safety.
