Report reveals UFO sighting near Hamsterley Forest
8:00am Thursday 19th July 2012 in News
By Helen Russell, Reporter (Wear Valley)
FOUR North-East police officers spotted a UFO while on a dog training exercise, according to new documents released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The sighting occurred in Wear Bank Road, between Wolsingham and Hamsterley, in County Durham, in September 2005.
It was among thousands of reports of unidentified flying objects received by the MoD between 1965 and 2008, which were recently handed over to the National Archives for publication on its website.
The report describes the UFO as being a three-dimensional diamond shape, similar in size to a large helicopter, with green lights on either side.
There was a red and white light on the centre of its body.
Four officers from the Durham Police force, who were on duty at the time and about to commence the dog training exercise saw the object, which reportedly stayed on scene for about two minutes.
It moved slowly northwards when lights from a car were shone in its direction.
The report states: “It was sighted above the field adjacent to the road. No sound was heard. There were clear skies.
“It was reported to Durham Police’s air support unit and Durham and Tees Valley Airport.”
The officers are not named in the file and it states the MoD was unable to reply as there was no address included by whoever submitted the report.
A spokesman for Durham Police said their protocol for reports of any such sightings is to refer them to the RAF search and rescue and air traffic control in case it is an aircraft in distress.
Elsewhere in the North-East, in August 2007, a report was received from a resident in Houghton-le-Spring, County Durham, stating they had witnessed two very bright lights moving silently in unison.
In Choppington, Northumberland , a man reported seeing a white, pencil line of very bright lights, which he described as being as bright as flash bulbs, bathing the whole sky in light.

my god if people do not realise that is mainly chinese lanterns then i do not know what the world is coming to....
On several occassions I saw a police helicopter doing a search over the wooded area infront of Ferry Hill Village, never found out why. From where I was I could see id was a Polcie Helicopter, but if someone were down below in the wooded area and saw these lights could they not mistake them for a UFO?

The helicopter crew were talking to the officers at the scene while sat in their office.
Reports such as these should not be laughed at, as lets face it what would you do in the same circumstances?
The object when first seen was below the officers vehicles in a field.
The police helicopter doesnt hover amongst valleys in between trees at night.
Its too dangerous to be near the ground with trees around at night.
The object was also silent and moved away from the officers at the time of being illuminated by their lights. Chinese lanterns dont have the option of heading into wind or being black in colour. I have yet to see one the size of a bus anyway.
There are a lot more objects being seen but not reported.
Remember there were 4 officers who saw this at the same time.

I believe in love and peace but UFO believers have been ridiculed for decades by bullies like you. I have taken it upon myself to ridicule you bullies (such as your aforementioned Chinese lantern theory, did you even read the article? what chinese lanterns have green flames?), then maybe you will begin to understand the significance of this topic.

It was absolutely pitch black with no moon. After about half a mile we suddenly saw loads of different coloured lights all around us. They were flashing on and off and forming shapes in the sky.
We were frozen stiff with terror until we remembered we were at Blackpool Illuminations.

Incidently globaljunglist the first recorded sighting of a UFO was around 1,000 BC and is found within the chronicles of an Egyptian Pharaoh of that period.

And the moment you use the word "UFO," people just switched off. They don’t want to know.
So if you talk about unauthorized penetration of the UK air defence region, people will listen, just talking about the same thing, but using different language
You are dealing with someone's belief system and, you know, the language is incredibly biased
Many sceptics raise entirely valid points, and any official research and investigation certainly the fact that nine out of ten UFOs have conventional explanations.
They are either misidentifications, or some sort of psychological or psychopathological explanation, or simply somebody making it up because they're fantasy-prone.
that to me does not explain the whole story. It's a question of mindset, as well and that is the paradigm you have to challenge if you want anyone to take this seriously.
It seems to me there is a technology on display, which goes beyond the cutting edge of our own.
People talk about prototype aircraft, but in my experience you simply don't fly those over populated areas where they can be photographed and put on the front page of the next morning's newspaper. If that's your best bit of hardware, you just don't risk it like that. And you don't fly into other people's air space without diplomatic clearance, either.
I concentrate on the science.
I'm interested in the UFOs seen by the police and military witnesses.
I'm interested in the near misses that pilots report, where their aircraft nearly collide with these things.
I'm interested in the visual sightings backed up by radar.
I'm interested in the military bases that are over flown by these things.
I'm interested in the cases where you have radiation readings on the ground.
These are no lights in the sky. These are not misidentifications or fantasy prone individuals. This is a cutting-edge technology being reported by reliable, trained observers, and it is something that goes beyond what we can do. That to me suggests that if it is not ours, it belongs to someone else. If that technology is better than ours, then possibly the extraterrestrial hypothesis seems to me the best explanation.

I am a holder of Bachelors degrees /masters in science, technology and engineering application of advanced composites, Quantum mechanics and classical physics: Physics with Astrophysics Aerospace, Aeronautical and Marine engineering and even with this relevant knowledge sometimes (just sometimes) an adequate explanation really does elude and defies reality.
And we (fellow colleagues and I) are left with a shrug of shoulder and a shake of head followed by simply ‘do you want to report it’ to those who have noted this ‘phenomenon’ (air traffic control, ships and surveillance boats, subs etc), if this is the case, it is offically ‘reported as ****** and logged in the appropriate files and further investigation may or may not be carried out.
"Yes indeed...WELCOME TO THE TWILIGHT ZONE...”
