TWO people were taken to hospital last night after a police car responding to a 999 call was involved in a crash.

The incident happened on Park Road North in Middlesbrough shortly before 9pm and involved the police car and a black Mitsubishi estate car.

The cars collided at the junction with Park Vale Road and Clairville Road, a cross roads controlled by traffic lights.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said a police officer who was driving the car and the driver of the Mitsubishi, a local man in his 40s, were taken to James Cook University Hospital and were believed to be suffering from neck injuries and shock.

Park Road North and the surrounding roads were closed for an hour.

Police inquiries into the crash are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting event number CVP107863.
