KEVIN Pearce has been appointed head of food and farming for the National Farmers' Union.

A former popular and well-respected senior policy adviser for the NFU's North-East region, he will be based at the NFU headquarters in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, and will head the NFU's commodity work as well as its work in the food chain.

Mr Pearce was brought up on a small farm in Glamorgan, South Wales. He left school at 16 and worked on a local farm until he joined the NFU in December 1985 as a group secretary in Glamorgan.

He joined the NFU's North-East region in 1992 and covered the posts of field manager and senior policy adviser.

In 1998 he joined the NFU headquarters in London as beef and sheep adviser and then as beef, sheep and Less Favoured Areas adviser. In 2004, he was appointed chief livestock adviser and in May 2005 took on a new position as head of food chain and farm policy. He started his new role on Monday.

Martin Haworth, director of policy at the NFU, said: "Kevin is widely known and respected in the farming community, Government and the food chain - he is just the right person to take on this challenging post."
