A LEGENDARY travel writer was in deepest Stockton this week.
American-born author Bill Bryson, famous for books like Notes from a Small Island and A Short History of Nearly Everything, toured Stockton in his role as chancellor of Durham University.
The university's Queen's Campus has two colleges in Stockton, and Mr Bryson was keen to learn more about the town.
He was greeted at Stockton Town Hall by the mayor, Coun Suzanne Fletcher. He took a tour of one of Stockton's heritage trails.
Coun Fletcher said: "We were delighted to welcome Bill Bryson to Stockton and to give him a small taste of the wonderful heritage our town has to offer."
Mr Bryson had lunch with international students and heard about their experiences as students in Stockton and the university.
The author was appointed chancellor of Durham University in April 2005.
