From this newspaper 150 years ago – The annual soiree in connection with the Cockerton Reading Room and Library was held in the national schoolroom, Cockerton, on Tuesday afternoon. The schoolroom and classroom, which are only small, were well filled, although the weather had been very unpropitious. About 140 persons took tea.

From this newspaper 100 years ago – In Richmond at St Mary’s Parish Church, the congregational church, the green Mission Room, and other places of worship on Sunday there were expressions of sorrow and sympathy for those who had suffered in the recent shipwreck of Titanic. The hymns Nearer, My God, To Me and Eternal Father, Strong To Save were impressively sung, and special and appropriate reference was made by the respective ministers from the pulpit.

From this newspaper 50 years ago – Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, has consented to become patron of the Friends of Bowes Museum, it was announced at the Society’s annual meeting in the museum library on Thursday, presided over by the chairman, Lord Gort. The Hon. H J N Vane, of Selaby, moved and it was unanimously agreed to convey the Friends’ thanks to the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother’s family is closely linked with the history of the museum.
