Crack discovery leads to closure of Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge

SEVERAL cracks have been discovered in Middlesbrough's iconic Transporter Bridge.

The structure will be closed for several weeks to allow what is being described as "urgent and essential" repair work to be carried out.

"While undertaking a detailed inspection of the rail tracks on the bridge’s upper booms on Saturday, maintenance staff discovered cracks in four locations," a spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said.

"The bridge has been closed with immediate effect and will remain out of operation until the rails have been replaced."

During the closure a free bus service will operate from the Transporter to Port Clarence from Wednesday, March 14.

The bridge celebrated its centenary last year.
