HE plays in black and white, runs around a lot, has lots of energy, is good with a ball and is looking for a new home.

No, Darlington FC's Jamie Chandler is not after a transfer but a loving family is being sought for a rescue dog named in honour of the Quaker's forthcoming trip to Wembley.

Quaker the dog has been at the Dog's Trust Rehoming Centre at Sadberge, near Darlington, for a few months.

Formerly named Barney, staff at the Dog's Trust have renamed the ball-loving pooch to commemorate Darlington FC's trip to the national stadium to play Mansfield Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

The staff at the centre thought the new name perfectly suited the three-year-old border collie-cross who is never happier than when playing with a ball.

Clare Hopps, the supporter relations officer, at the Dogs Trust at Darlington, said: "I don't know why we didn't call him Quaker before.

"He loves playing with the ball and doesn't want to leave the field.

"He's got bags and bags of energy and is now just looking for his forever family.

"He's a lovely dog and loves lots of care and attention."

Quakers would ideally be suited to a home where any children are over the age of 14 and could possibly live with a female dog.

The Dogs Trust never destroys a healthy dog.

Since the Darlington centre opened in 1994 it has helped to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome 15,000 dogs.

Anyone, Darlington fan or otherwise, who feels that they can offer a home to Quaker can call the Dogs Trust on 01325-333114 The centre at Hill House Farm, Sadberge, is also open every day except Tuesday from 12noon until 4pm.

Until September it will also open late on Thursdays until 7pm.
