THE Victorian cliff lifts in Saltburn have been lowered back onto their tracks after a £30,000 refurbishment.

The famous water powered carriages will be up and running in time for the Easter holiday period.

Over the winter the carriages have had their first off site overhaul since 1992 with the new addition of an intercom system which will allow staff to speak to passengers.

A giant crane was used to place them back on their tracks.

The Victorian carriages are a popular tourist attraction and have been missing from their site since November last year.

The carriages link Saltburn pier to the town and were opened on June 28, 1884 making it the oldest remaining water-balance cliff lift in Britain.
