A HOSPITAL maternity unit has undergone a major refurbishment - thanks to a former patient who never forgot the care she was given.

Ruth Oakley from Northallerton lost two children at birth but always appreciated the care provided by staff during a very difficult time in her life.

She was matron of Mount Pleasant at Marske, Redcar, up until her retirement and dedicated her life to the old people and staff under her care.

And when she died in October last year she left £110,000 to the Friends of the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton - and the money has been spent on a major upgrade for the maternity unit.

A special memorial plaque now has pride of place outside the new larger labour ward room in Ruth’s memory.

The room can be used by bereaved families affording more privacy and space for fathers and partners to stay leading to greater support for the mums. Another room has also been adapted to improve disabled access.

Friarage spokesman Anne Wall said: "We are delighted with the improved facilities and grateful for this legacy which has made it possible for us to update the labour ward and enable us to give the quality of care that our mums, dads and babies deserve.

"It's not just about the equipment, we wanted to create an environment where women feel calm and confident and where privacy and dignity is assured."

Friends of the Friarage chairman Steve Lamb added: "We know the Friarage is highly regarded by local people, through the support we receive in fund-raising events, in our shop and from legacies. "We are glad to support such a vital service which benefits local women and really makes a difference."
