A NEW online service to help people avoid running up big fines for forgetting to return overdue library books is being introduced in North Yorkshire.
From next month, the council’s library service will send reminders by email to users who choose to register a current email address.
Coupled with the ability to renew books online, it is hoped the new service could mean an end to escalating library fines.
The county’s executive member for community services, Chris Metcalfe, said: "The addition of the new email reminder notices to our electronic library service will be a great benefit to library members.
"People can already reserve and renew their books online, so this new service should be a great help in reducing unwanted fines."
