RESIDENTS are being asked to get involved in a project to investigate the possibility of creating a specialist sports area for youngsters in Guisborough.

Parents are attempting to drum up support to build a new park for bike riders, skateboarders and in-line skate enthusiasts.

They have called on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s Guisborough neighbourhood officer to help achieve their goal by organising a meeting.

Lynda McMann said: “This meeting is a result of residents and parents expressing concerns about the lack of facilities in Guisborough and approaching the council to help them sort it out.

“The parents said there was nowhere in the town for the young people to ride their BMX bikes and skateboards or practice using their in-line skates.

“This meeting is to bring together as many people as possible with the intention of setting up a steering committee to look at different ways of moving the project forward.

“We are hoping to contact other groups that have had similar experiences of creating a skate park and, hopefully, they will be able to help us with our plans.

“At the moment, we haven’t identified a plot of land in the town because that is one of the things the group will be looking at.

“All the parents that I have spoken to are willing to work with the local authority to ensure that the plan comes to fruition and that we can create a new skate park.”

The meeting is open to all and the plan is to involve as many young people as possible.

Letters have been sent to householders in the town and posters advertising the meeting have been distributed in the hope of attracting as many people as possible.

She added: “We have no idea how many people will turn up, but we will not be turning anyone away and we will give everyone a chance to get involved from young to old.”

Anyone interested in attending should go to Belmont House, Rectory Lane, Guisborough, at 6pm on Tuesday.
