A SCHOOL that works with children who have special educational needs has developed its own farmyard to teach pupils more about where their food comes from and how to interact with animals.
The Mowbray School, in Bedale, started its farm 18 months ago by introducing chickens and joining the School Farm Network.
The school has now added three rare-breed pigs to the site and is growing its own crops, which are used by the school kitchens to prepare lunch.
Headteacher Jonathan Tearle said: “The farm is now a much more interesting place. Pupils gather before school starts and at break times to stroke the pigs and watch them play football.”
The school is also hoping to expand the farm and make it commercially viable to create employment opportunities for young people with learning disabilities
