THE Wensleydale Longwool Sheep Breeders’ Association held its annual meeting on Saturday, April 24, at the Tempest Arms Hotel, Elslack, near Skipton.
President Dr Agnes Winter announced that Jack Watkinson, of Leyburn, had won both of the association’s trophies.
These are the William Rhodes Perpetual Trophy (rose bowl), awarded to the most successful exhibitor of the past year, and the Ruth Pedley Memorial Trophy, awarded to the member achieving the most notable interbreed success.
Mr Watkinson was selected for his achievements at the 2009 Great Yorkshire Show, where his Wensleydale breed champion (a hogg in full wool) took not only the Longwool Ewe Championship, but also the Wool on the Hoof Reserve Supreme Award.
Mr Watkinson was the veterinary adviser to the TV production of All Creatures Great and Small. He has been a breeder and exhibiter of Wensleydale sheep for almost a quarter of a century.
