A YOUNG cattle handler has become the first recipient of a trophy dedicated to the memory of a popular pub landlord and farmer.

Lucy Corner, 15, of Brafferton, near Newton Aycliffe, won the George Wilkinson Memorial Trophy at the spring sale at Leyburn Auction Mart on Saturday.

The trophy was bought by Mr Wilkinson’s family following his death in 2006 and given to the auction mart to present to the winner of the young handlers’ contest.

The former landlord of the King’s Head, in Leyburn, previously farmed for his father, John, and Frank Metcalfe at Washfold.

His son, James Wilkinson, said: “He liked farming and he liked kids going into farming so we thought this would be a fitting tribute.

“It is also something for his grandchildren to aim for.”

Grandson Blue Taylor and granddaughter Beth Wilkinson both came second in their classes at the weekend.

The spring sale gives farmers the chance to buy top class cattle direct from the breeders, which can be compete at the summer’s country shows.

Stephen Walker, auction manager, said: “There was a good quality of entries.

“Fifty cattle were entered and 48 were sold with a top price of £4,200.”

Organisers have thanked local businesses which sponsored the event.
