THE national spring show of beef cattle will take place at Hexham mart in May.

It is part of Beef Expo 2010, which is organised by the National Beef Association and takes place on Thursday, May 27.

The spring show is open to commercial beef cattle by continental and native breed sires and has a total prize money of £5,000.

The 20 classes will be judged by Archie MacGregor, of Glasgow, and include sections for calves up to 425kg (steers) and 400kg (heifers), and steers and heifers by native breeds, Limousin, British Blue and Charolais.

The supreme champion will receive £500, and £250 for the reserve. The other champions will receive £200 each, with class prizes ranging from £50 for first to £5 for sixth place.

Two classes for young handlers, 16 years and under, and 17 to 21 years, will be judged by Mrs Libby MacGregor.
