TWO midwives and a healthcare assistant have retired after more than 120 years’ service between them, during which time they delivered thousands of babies.

Midwives Gillian Fawcett and Susan Bunt, along with healthcare assistant Susan Fish, worked at the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

The trio, who all live locally, retired just before Christmas and enjoyed a reunion with former colleagues at a retirement party this month.

Mrs Fawcett, 64, said the three had struck up a close friendship during their time working together, and planned to stay friends in retirement.

She said: “I started nursing in 1963 and trained as a midwife in 1969. I have been working at the Friarage since then.

“Myself and the two Sues have become quite close and we will, of course be staying in touch.”

Mrs Fawcett plans to keep active in retirement and has already joined her local branch of the University of the Third Age.
