WORKSHOPS for young instrumentalists will be held in Ripon over the weekend of April 30 and May 1.

The tutors will be the five soloists performing with the St Cecilia Orchestra at its spring concert in Holy Trinity Church on the Saturday evening. Participants will be given a free ticket to the concert, which includes Bach’s Suite No 2 in B minor for Flute & Strings, featuring the famous Badinerie, and Haydn’s Symphony No 85, nicknamed La Reine.

Also on the programme are two more modern pieces, The Sinfonia Concertante, by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, which has striking solo parts for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon, and the Divertissement for Bassoon and Strings, by the French composer Jean Francaix.

The soloists – all talented, young, professional musicians – will act as tutors at workshops on the Friday evening or Saturday afternoon.

They are Gemma Sheehan-Dare (flute), Lucie Dalton (oboe), Lorna Tyack (bassoon), Dorin Tuca (violin) and Jessica Burroughs (cello), who will provide informal classes for young players, offering helpful tips, advice, coaching and ideas on performance and presentation.

Each session will last about an hour and involve a maximum of about six students.

Parents, friends and teachers are welcome to attend. Times will be arranged depending on numbers; for details and to enrol, contact 01765- 602856, mail@st-cecilia.org.uk or st-cecilia.org.uk.
