Listen with Coun Tugwell ...

A FORMER United Nations official has turned his hand to writing bedtime stories for children.

Ian Tugwell, of Hunton, near Bedale, recently took delivery of the first 100 copies of his self-published collection, The Giants of Champerloova.

The 77-year-old, who is also chairman of Hunton Parish Council, oversaw development projects in many of the world’s poorest countries, including Afghanistan.

He said: “These are ten bedtime stories, to be read to children between the ages of four and eight, in those last moments before snuggling down for the night.

“Each chapter is a separate episode and a complete story. The reports highlight an exodus of young people from the area as a result of a shortage of affordable housing and highly-paid employment.

The consultants said their analysis showed the area had the characteristics of a typical rural economy.

These included an ageing population, outward commuting of higher- skilled workers and a high proportion of low skilled workers.

A significant number of self-employed agricultural and constriction workers were also identified, along with a high proportion of employment in tourism.

Other recommendations for Leyburn included improved parking and public toilets, a larger visitor centre and the relocation of the auction mart.

The consultants suggested Leyburn could develop as a centre for weddings.

Vacant shop windows should be utilised as display space and plans for an arts and cultural centre should be developed.

In Middleham, the consultants suggested the town should develop racing-linked tourism, including better access for the public to the gallops.

Improved walking, cycling and public transport links to Leyburn were also proposed, along with the need to develop the Key Centre as a hub for business.

The report also recommended that a feasibility study should be conducted into the use of Middleham Town Hall as a racing museum.
