Festive treats for Afghanistan-bound RAF personnel

MILITARY personnel set to spend Christmas away from their families in Afghanistan can at least be sure of some festive treats.

Around 100 members of 3 Squadron, based at RAF Leeming, will be saying goodbye to their loved ones at one of the toughest times of the year when they fly out during the first week of December.

But Warrant Officer Steve Cartwright was determined to do what he could to make the day a little extra special.

He contacted confectionery company Nestle, who were more than happy to send 100 selection packs as a seasonal gift.

And when supermarket chain Aldi heard that the squadron was deploying, they decided to donate no less than 100 bags of goodies including shower gel, biscuits, sweets and chewing gum.

"The fact that big companies are willing to donate something like this shows real generosity," said Steve.

"Aldi has just been brilliant. It does brighten up your day on operations when you receive something like that – and all we want is to make that big difference on that one special day."

Leanne Rees, manager of Catterick’s branch of Aldi, said: "One member of our staff used to serve in the Army, and others are married to soldiers so the forces are very close to the heart of this store – although this is the first time we have been contacted by the RAF.

"We were only too glad to help."

The goodies have already been packaged up and will be sent out to Afghanistan when the squadron deploys, ready to be opened on Christmas day.
