FOR most people a bad hair day is nothing to boast about. It’s a day to skulk indoors and not be seen by anybody.
But for youngsters at one North Yorkshire school it was an excuse to have a good time and raise cash for charity at the same time.
The 31 youngsters at the Church of England primary at Pickhill, near Thirsk, had their head teacher’s permission to go to school with wild and colourful locks as long as they paid in a donation to Children in Need appeal.
And they joined in the spirit of the occasion so enthusiastically that they raised more than £80 for the appeal.
Head Christine Gabbott even joined in, styling her own blonde hair into six short bunches and colouring it red in places.
"All sorts of styles and colours came in, but what struck me the most was the number of creatures in the children's hair," she laughed.
"Some even had worms in! One or two had straw in their hair and we had all sorts of bobbles and colours and even a wig."
She added: "I chose the idea when I read suggestions of what we could do as a school for Children in Need. I'm just very glad I'm going to the hairdresser's tomorrow. I hope this red spray paint washes out."
The children’s next fund-raiser is going to be for an animal charity when they will pay a donation to go to school dressed as their favourite DVD character.
