Pupils help with repairs in North Yorks Moors National Park

YOUNGSTERS have helped to repair part of a famous long distance walk that stretches across the North York Moors.

Pupils from Stokesley School doing Duke of Edinburgh awards have done work on the Cleveland Way.

The group has done the work near Captain Cook’s Monument as the Cleveland Way National Trail celebrates its 40th anniversary.

They helped North York Moors National Park Authority’s assistant volunteers officer Bill Ashton-Wickett.

They have filled in worn patches and resurface the stretch near Coate Moor, near Kildale, and they cleared drains near the monument.

Bill Ashton-Wickett said: "With over 300,000 pairs of boots tramping different bits of the 110 mile Cleveland Way each year, making sure it’s kept in good condition takes a lot of time and effort.

"The boys were all very enthusiastic and did a great job in improving their local stretch of the National Trail.

"They learnt about the history of National Trails and National Parks and why people campaigned so hard for access to and protection of some of our most treasured landscapes."

This year is also the 60th anniversary of the National Parks and Countryside Act which created the national parks.

To mark the birthday a website www.diamondsinthelandscape.org.uk has been set up to give details on the parks.

Also on the site are 40 walks from across the country that can be downloaded.
