Staff to walk around Yorkshire for a good cause

STAFF from an insurance firm are going several steps further to raise money for a children’s charity by walking around the whole of Yorkshire.

Workers from the Yorkshire branches of Towergate Underwriters are taking turns to cover sections of the border of the Yorkshire Ridings, North, South and East, covering 500 miles in a month.

They will travel from Roseberry Topping, across to York, down to Sheffield, along the border to Hull, and back up the coast and inland to Roseberry Topping again..

At least two members of staff must cover a section at a time, with staff from the Teesside branch of Towergate starting the challenge by covering sections between Roseberry Topping and Hawes, in North Yorkshire.

The challenge will end on August 1, Yorkshire Day, when staff from the Stokesley branch climb Roseberry Topping and unfurl a Yorkshire flag.

The participants can walk, cycle, run or ride on a horse to cover their section before handing over to other members of staff.

The challenge has been dubbed the Yorky Walkie Talkie, and aims to raise £25,000 for Childline, by saying ‘let us walk, so you can talk’.

One of the walk organisers, Jackie Simmonds, said: "We do a sponsored walk every year, but we wanted to do something bigger and a bit different.

"Childline are in desperate need of funding to help train volunteer counsellors, as they do not have enough people to man their telephone lines, so we feel it’s a worthy cause."
