AN innovative eco-friendly play area is the dream of youngsters in a market town, according to a competition designed to find out what facilities they wanted to see built.
An unused field, close to a beck, has been picked out as the perfect spot in Bedale to build a play house, play area and water park.
The scheme is the idea of a group of youngsters from Bedale High School.
Their vision has seen them win first prize in a competition organised by Hambleton District Council. Two years ago, the council was awarded ‘beacon’ status by central government, for "promoting sustainable communities through the planning process".
As part of that it scheme, launched the competition, challenging secondary schools and colleges in the district to come up with a sustainable project for their town or village. Maurice Cann, the council’s head of service development, said: "The children have been very inventive in their scheme.
"The competition is designed to find out what young people want in their communities as well as make them think about sustainability.
"This was a very high quality entry – the young people had put a lot of thought into it."
