THE Mayor of Darlington helped children get into the mood for tree planting – by bursting into song.

Coun Ian Haszeldine (picture, right) gave pupils of Harrowgate Hill Primary School an impromptu serenade as they went to work in Bensham Park, adapting So What by the American pop star Pink to suit the occasion.

The planting of 15 trees in the park was part of a scheme by Darlington Borough Council.

It is hoped that by taking part tree planting projects, children will take ownership of the trees and learn to care for them and not vandalise them.

Katy Harrison, from the school, said: “We have a school council and also have ecomonitors and they were keen to do things in the community.

“The children absolutely loved the tree planting and they loved seeing the mayor.

He was singing So What by Pink, but made it into a tree planting songs and the kids really enjoyed that."
