Train travel - 1930s-style

The vintage train The vintage train

STEAM enthusiasts will be able to travel in style this autumn on a vintage train hauled by one of the nation's most iconic locomotives.

Period carriages from the 1930s era, built in teak and with a wealth of features inside, will be in operation on the North York Moors Railway.

They will be hauled by one of the last remaining A4 Pacific-class locomotives, Sir Nigel Gresley, also a 1930s creation.

They will run between Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont on September 8, 20, 22 to 24th, October 5 and from October 7 to 9.

The vintage train complements an already busy and popular daily steam service across the North York Moors, with many services now going all the way to Whitby.

From September 26 to 28 the railway will host its annual steam gala which will feature up to eight locos from the golden days of the industry, including engine 71000 Duke of Gloucester - the first visit of a BR Standard Pacific to the NYMR.

Between October 10 and 12 stations along the line will be taking part in a Railway at war weekend.

Now in its 16th year, the event has become the major event on the railway's calendar, attracting thousands of visitors from across the UK and Europe, with parades, re-enactments, vehicle and equipment displays, and stall holders selling a variety of goods from clothing to books and music.
