Preparations are underway at Richmond Operatic Society for its last performance of its centenary year.

The final show of the Society’s 100th year will be The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is being performed at Richmond’s Georgian Theatre until Saturday, November 18.

The gothic musical is based on the novel by Victor Hugo, but also features music from the Disney animated film, with favourites such as ‘Hellfire’ and ‘God help the outcasts’ being featured.

Chair Suanne Hutchins said she was “honoured” to be leading the group during such a historic year.

Mrs Hutchins added: “We have had such a variety of performances, people and friendships made and I love hearing all the stories from past and present.

“When I reflect on people’s experiences, I can relate to them so much and I witness the same experiences time and time again through our members’ mutual love of musical theatre.”

Richmond Operatic Society has delighted audiences in the market town with 176 shows in total since its founding.

Its first-ever performance took place in 1924 with H.M.S. Pinafore — which is set to return to the stage next year with a “modern twist”, said Mrs Hutchins.

“This is an exciting year and whilst we are busy in the background putting plans into place, it will be worth all the hard work to celebrate this huge achievement,” she added.

A number of special events have been held to mark the centenary, including a special concert in August which featured popular songs from stage shows from the past century.

Mrs Hutchins added: “With shows scheduled both new and old, concerts, themed social nights and quizzes it’s wonderful to see that the Society is as vibrant as ever and providing a creative space for the people of Richmond and beyond to be part of its rich history.”

“We would encourage any and all to come along to see the final show of our celebratory year at The Georgian Theatre Royal this month, it’s not one you’ll want to miss!”

Tickets for The Hunchback of Notre Dame at Richmond Georgian Theatre can be purchased from the venue’s website at www.georgiantheatreroyal.co.uk. The show opened on Wednesday.
