Two men have set themselves the challenge of visiting all of the 100 pubs in Darlington and the surrounding area.

Dan Shaw and Gav Baker, from Houghton, decided on New Year's Day that they would finally carry out their plan to have a pint at all of the pubs in town.

There are nearly 100 pubs on their list and they have 20 left to visit.

At each pub they write a short review and score them out of 10.

Their favourite pub so far has been the recently redecorated Hoptimist in Darlington town centre.

Their review said: "Wow what a pub this has transformed into. Modern and brilliantly refurbished, pool table, table football, two dart boards (they’re interactive though and have electronic games and auto scoring attached to them although have to pay to use), all sorts of drinking games set up on the tables, huge TVs with sports on (horse racing on one and football on others) music on."

They gave it a rating of 9.5 out of 10.

Dan, an engineer at Ineos, and Gav, a deputy transport manager at Aldi, met 13 years ago at a poker night at the Springfield.

Since that night that have become firm friends.

Dan's favourite pint is a Peroni and Gav's is a Moretti.

Dan, 38, said: "I had an idea in my head for a few years. I wanted to do every pub in Darlington.

"It was New Year's Day, we were in Springfield and we decided we would do every pub in town.

"To start with we just posted pictures of us at the pub and then people commented asking us what we thought and we started to give reviews."

Gav, 36, said he'd lived in the area for all of this life and added: "We had never been in a lot of the pubs we have now visited.

"We hope that we give people more ideas of where they can go.

"If someone sees one of our reviews and thinks I'll give that a go, we can give businesses a bit of a boost.

"Next year we could go further afield but we won't be doing it all over again."

On their Facebook page 'The Great Almighty Year Long Pub Crawl' you can find all of their reviews and the ratings they have given each pub.

They emphasised that even if they didn't like a certain pub that it might be the perfect one for you.
